police barrel question

OK. I tried searching for this, but could not find what I was looking for.

Very simple...what defines a "police barrel"?

A Police 870 barrel is simply a short barrel sold through Remington Law Enforcement.

Apart from the specialty MCS barrels, Police barrels are generally just standard, short 870 barrels with guide ring detents, blued or Parkerized finishes, and fixed Improved Cylinder or Modified chokes. Last I checked, none of the barrels in Remington's parts list are even described as "Police", they're just listed as what they are (for example: BBL 12/14 MOD RS PARKERIZED).

As far as I know, there's nothing preventing civilians from owning Police barrels aside from those shorter than 18" being NFA items (in the US). None of the barrels in the list are marked as LE/military-only (though a couple are listed as factory repair only), so it would just be a matter of finding a civilian distributor.

Many "Police" barrels are designated as such do to length as has been stated...generally 18-1/2" cylinder bore. Some police barrels were 20" cylinder bore with factory rifle sights. Police length barrels can be made from basically any donor barrel as simply cutting it to length is all that is required. They can then be left cylinder bore or threaded for choke tubes. Bead front or post style front sights can be added as to preference as well. I have several factory 18-1/2" bead front sight barrels, as well as having had vent ribbed barrels cut to 18-1/2" and 20".

For what it's worth, the oem barrel of my 2012 870P is the 18" with the bead/pedestal sight, fixed IC choke.

yes other then the finish, i think just a higher QC cheecks are dont to them.
all the ones we sell are IC Or mod, where as the express bbls are all cyl bore
