What's yalls loads for home defense?

Post by Blackpowder8bore »

Ok, for home defense I go with the 12 gauge 2 3/4" 00 buck from an open choke(C,IC) and an 18.5" barrel.
As much as I like the though of a 3.1/2" 2oz load of 00 buck in my 887, I think a 2 3/4" 9pellet load will do. Do just fine out of the Remington and less chance of over penetration.

For home defense,if I want no misfires,I'd choose Winchester or Federal 00 buckshot. Remington ammo is def good but I've had more squibs over the years from Rem shells than Win and I don't like Hornady. Once in my 7 mag on a 40 yrd buck I headshot, I had a 154 gr Hornady SP bullet bend at a 90 degree angle and come to rest under the opposite hide. Didn't expand, nothing. Should've blown deers head off. Irrelevant, but the reason I don't buy Hornady.

People say my AR12 12g would be better, but nothings more reliable than a good pump shotgun.Like an 870 or in my case an 887
And they say most self defense situations happen 3-3-3 3shots,3feet,3seconds. If that's true, and it's just one shot of 00 buck@3 feet...it's over.

WHAT TYPE OF AMMO DO YALL LIKE FOR HOME DEFENSE???

00 Buck. I'm not concerned with over penetration of any 00 buckshot. More concerned with hitting the target.

As for 3-3-3, Active Self Protection (ASP) on youtube recently covered it and they don't think it's true. Over the last couple of decades they have reviewed 10's of thousands of shootings. Police body cam, security footage, etc and they have concluded it isn't a reliable statistic. It's an interesting segment so of course I can't find it to post a link.
