Who on here is using the SBE sport tac, gg&g, Vang comp, or S&J delrin type 3 follower in their Remington 870 express tactical? It's the one with the xs ghost rings and plus 2 extensions. Friend is looking to upgrade from the plastic follower.

I've used the Vang Comp and the S&J Type 3. Wouldn't recommend the Vang Comp; it's heavy and in my experience doesn't like to move smoothly across joints or transitions in the mag tube. Also, it's the same color as a lot of shotshells, and solid steel followers can damage receivers over time with heavy use (most folks probably don't use their 870s enough to see this problem, but competition shooters, LE types, or folks who do a lot of practice shooting or shotgun classes should be aware of it).
I like the S&J Type 3. It has a pretty narrow internal diameter compared to a lot of other cup-style followers, and a lot of extended mag springs won't coil up neatly inside it, but the factory Remington extensions use a narrow spring due to the bracket groove/follower stop built into the extension tube, so the S&J Type 3 is a good match. Good material and manufacturing quality too.

I’ll have to agree with synchronizer. I went with the type 3 based on his recommendation almost a year ago and I haven’t had a problem yet. Much easier to see than the factory one too.

I use an s&j type 3 in my Mossberg 500 with 590 mag tube. It seems to feed fine with the extended spring.Synchronizor wrote:I've used the Vang Comp and the S&J Type 3. I have the GG&G Follower in my 590 a1 with extension and it works good and I have the GG&G Follower with Nordic extension on my hawk 982 and it seems to work to.Synchronizor wrote:I've used the Vang Comp and the S&J Type 3. Re: Sbe, gg&g, Vang comp, or S&J delrin type 3 follower in Remington 870 express tactical with +2 extension.
What I'm referring to are beehive-style magazine springs, which are narrow on the ends, but widen out in the middle. This is in contrast to factory-style straight springs, which have the same-diameter coils over the full length of the spring. A lot of aftermarket extensions come with beehive springs, and while the S&J Type 3 may work okay with those springs, it won't as effectively center and guide that style of spring since most of the coils are too wide to fit inside the cup. A follower that uses a tail to center and guide the spring is typically a better choice for wider beehive springs.

That cuts down on capacity though. Does it not using the nipple follower?Synchronizor wrote:What I'm referring to are beehive-style magazine springs, which are narrow on the ends, but widen out in the middle. Not necessarily. For one thing, good-quality tailed followers are generally designed so that the length of the tail is equal to or less than the spring's solid length, so the tail isn't really the limiting factor for capacity if you're looking at an extended magazine. And when you're using a spring that's too wide to fit inside a cup-style follower, a cup-style design is effectively the same as a solid-bodied design. I've tried the tailed S&J Type 2 follower alongside the cup-style S&J Type 3 in an extension with a wide beehive spring, and they both gave pretty much the same usable capacity.

I'm using the type 3 orange and it loads smooth as butter!
