New User from Washington State

Post by misterrbuttons »

To go along with my first season hunting, a few weeks ago I bought a Remington Wingmaster as my first gun from a pawn shop for $80. She was rusty, the stock was chipped to shit, and she jammed every time I racked the slide. After a few hours on the internet, a few much more fruitful hours on this site, and many more in my garage, my Wingmaster became the smoothest, most reliable gun I've fired. I've used her for duck and geese to great success, and next year I plan to use her for turkey and maybe even deer hunting. I couldn't ask for a better first gun, and I have the information I found on this forum to thank for getting her into working order.

So thank you, Rem870. I'm very happy to be here.

Welcome to the forum, and what a great first gun. I love hearing about thrashed 870s being brought back to life. One of my favorite stories involved a 20ga Wingmaster that had presumably spent a decade at the bottom of a river, followed by 15 years in the corner of a skinning shed. With a fair bit of work - but apparently no replacement parts - a family member made it completely functional again.

What was causing your slide to jam up?

The slide release was jumping up over the action bar whenever I racked the slide back. The shells would get caught on the slide release, and either wouldn't chamber or be flipped around and try to chamber backwards. And while mine wasn't as bad as the one in your story, I still spent most of my day off just trying to get her broken down. In the end, I was able to get her working again without any replacement parts.
