which bushnell site with 20"pic rail?

Post by smoker »

Hi all!
I have a 870 police version 18", flat black, with a 20" mesa pic rail. My barrel is 18 or 18.5" and has an elevated front sight and ghost ring rear.
I want to put a Bushnell red dot sight on it. Can anyone recommend with All of the several sights they offer, would be good mainly inside and outside range shooting target practice ? 100-200 yards would be as far as I would need and then not exactly sure if that is asking too much of the gun? I looked at Bushnell pictorial review and came to this great civil forum for advice. The other burning question is with the red dot sight mounted, can I see over, thru or under the mount in order to use the stock sites for in house or backup? Some of the sights are "priceless" whereas I was looking to spend 100 bucks give or take. Also planning on purchasing mesa tactical urbino stock with cheek riser and don't know how it will function with these sights.
Would appreciate any advice from you guys and girls. I really like the attitude and knowledge from this site.

Thank u,
Smoker

As far as a Bushnell red dot sight goes, i'm not too familiar with what they offer. If you're flexible on what brand sight you want to mount to your 20" pic rail, and are looking to only spend around $100, you might consider a couple of sights in that price range that i've read descent reviews on, and heard some good things about. Mind you you're not going to get the best out there for that price, eg. Aimpoint, Eotech, etc. Anyway for that price, i've heard good things about the Burris Fast Fire red dot site, and no you would'nt be able to see underneath it. One other option is the BSA Stealth Tactical; which is a 30mm, 4" long red/green/blue dot adjustable sight, with adjustable brighness settings and flip up lens covers. The BSA would give you more options in adjusting for long range shooting, and is still a "both eyes open" sight at close ranges. Any red dot/holographic sight you mount to that pic rail would not allow you to see underneath, it would just be your primary sight. Of course you can keep your "battle sights" in place for backup sights, which most people do.

The Burris fast fire is more of a reflex style, red dot sight, and you could co-witness your fixed sight through the window, but are designed to enable you to just put your red dot on target and fire quickly (once sighted in). There is probably one or two more sights that might be ok as well. In only allowing a $100 budget for a red dot sight, the choices are very limited in terms of getting a reliable and descent quality sight, sorry to say. You mentioned getting a Mesa Tactical Urbino Stock w/cheekriser; i have one of those, and can assure you you would be very happy with that stock. The adjustable cheekriser lets you set it to let you get the best posible sight picture, a solid cheekweld and a recoil reducing Limbsaver buttpad and recoil dampening pistol grip. So on that matter, i can tell you it's a great pistol grip stock, and would work with any sight configuration you have. Hope that helps. Good luck!

Are you looking for a long-range optic for slugs, or a simpler reflex sight for HD and short-range shooting? And what else are you planning to install on the rail? I'm assuming you didn't buy the 20" version just to mount a red dot.
