Remington 870 Quality Drop Year?

Post by GilbertoMHobbs »

Helo,

I’ve been eyeing a Mossberg 590 as the ideal pick, but I might settle for a Remington 870 if the price is right. I’ve heard Remington quality dropped off after the Freedom Group takeover, but I’m not sure what year that really started to show.

Does anyone know roughly what year the 870 started to decline in quality, and what should I watch out for when checking one at a gun show?

Any tips would be appreciated!

Thank you! :D

"Quality" is a nebulous issue. Every manufacturer that makes great things often spits out a lemon. I've seen some great 870's lately, so it is a more of an each-and-every-one issue to check over. I think 2016 is the year most folks consider the beginning of that, and many hate the "Express" black nitride finish but then some also love it. Handy and durable. Find one, see how the action works, and see if it speaks to you.
