Express vs. Police vs. Wingmaster for SBS Build

Post by 870Novice »

Hello, this is my first time posting a gun-building question. So, forgive me if this information is already easily available or discussed in another post. I've always wanted to have an NFA item, and an SBS 870 has always been at the top of my list. I really like the idea of having a vented barrel with ghost ring sights. This leads me towards finding a Wingmaster to use as the base for the build, but I'm not entirely certain. Is there any particular benefit to using an express or police receiver and just sourcing a vented barrel that's already the length I want?

I'm not well educated in the difference between variants when it comes to receiver construction. Is it safe to assume that most 870 receivers are mostly alike to the point that it wouldn't matter where I started, or should I consider a specific model, given I want a vent barrel?

Any help or advice on this would be greatly appreciated. - Thanks

The main difference in these 870's is "polish and finish". Wingmasters usually came with a high gloss luster bluing, Express models have a black nitride almost-Parkerized finish, and the police models were about the same. Frankly IMHO a high-polish bluing would glint light is someone was sweeping you with a light, so it seems to me the Express finish would be better at night.
