Possible 870 issue

Post by Vazquez76 »

Hey guys, a quick little background, i am a SUB 1/2 shooter with a Remington 700 i know how to adjust out for range and wind calls.

But my issue is i just bought an 870 tactical a few weeks back when to sight in at 50 yards with an optic no hits, brought back into 25 yards shot with optic no hits, took off optic used the XS ghost ring sights i ended up grouping 4.5 inches high at 25 yds. I then co witnessed the optic but ended up shooting off paper again, so i took the optic off and went back to 50 yds with the sights and was not on paper, i ended up running out of rounds but i'm still baffled why i'm not hitting paper at those distances.

The rounds i was using is the Remington 2 3/4 sluggers and the Optic is a vortex venom, i'm not worried about the sight right now i'm just trying to figure out why i'm not on paper i was using a rest as well and was able to Zero two other rifles with the same rest.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks.

The first thing I would try is a different brand of slugs. Remington Sluggers are usually pretty good, but sometimes a particular gun just doesn't like a particular slug load. Try a few different brands, and if they all print high, then you're probably looking at an issue with the gun itself. Maybe the barrel's weird somehow, maybe the sights & optic rail are off, it could be several things. But it's usually quickest and easiest to eliminate ammunition as the source of issues first.

I highly suspect AI posted this, a zombie post for one of several reasons. I deleted the post but kept the dialogue below.

Most likely it’s a zeroing/setup issue, not your shooting: check that the optic is mounted correctly and tight, confirm you’re using the correct mount/height for the 870 (not losing adjustment range), and start very close (10–15 yards) to get on paper before moving out. Also verify you’re using rifled slugs with a smoothbore (or proper barrel type) and that the barrel/receiver alignment isn’t off. If it’s still way off with iron sights, the front/rear sight alignment or barrel could be the problem, so it may be worth having a gunsmith check it.

Yeah, I’d lean toward a setup/zeroing issue rather than anything serious with the gun.
If you’re not even on paper at 25–50 yards, something’s off in the basics. I’d start at 10–15 yards just to get a rough zero, then move out. Also double-check the optic mount — especially on the 870, it’s easy to run out of adjustment if the mount height or alignment isn’t right.
Since you were hitting high with the ghost rings, that at least suggests the gun is grouping, just not where you expect. Could be sight alignment or even how the sights are regulated from factory.
Also worth trying a different slug just to rule that out, but this doesn’t really sound like ammo to me.
If it’s still off even with irons at close range, I’d start suspecting sight alignment or barrel issues.

You're starting off a bit too far out; try zeroing at 10–15 yards first, then move back to 25–50 yards. Since your grouping is currently hitting 4.5 inches high at 25 yards, simply adjust your sights downward gradually, and you'll get back on target. Shotguns shooting slugs can be a bit "finicky" compared to rifles—different types of ammunition may impact at different points—so be sure to stick with just one specific type of ammo while making your adjustments. You're using a ghost ring sight, which is the standard setup; just re-zeroing from a close distance should resolve the issue.

Disagree. 25 yards isn't too far out to start even with slugs, but if the OP isn't on paper at 25 yards then there is some controlling barrel-receiver setup issue. Although why we're rehashing a ~10-year old post where the OP never returned or provided any update is beyond me.
