I just tried to buy a short barrel for a 20 ga. 870 Wingmaster, from Midway, and though I think I followed the complex instructions, it did not fit and I returned it. The hole in the receiver is too large for the barrel as is the magazine tube.

Is there hope to find such a barrel? I did not know they made different receivers in the same caliber!

Yes, some 20ga Wingmasters are on the 12ga frame and some are the smaller 20ga specific frame. You need the correct barrel for the frame. Good luck finding the large one these days.

I bought a used barrel... off Gunbroker I think that was for a large frame 20ga and had a gunsmith cut it down and put a bead sight on it.

It was about 1972 when Remington started making the smaller receiver on the 20 gauge shotguns. Pre-1972 the 20 gauge models were done on a 12 gauge receiver, and the ejector system was different to accommodate for wider receiver as well.

Sometimes the newer receivers are referred to as a "LW" (lightweight) receiver. So if the barrel fits a LW receiver, you don't want that one.

It took me awhile to find one, I do think I skipped a couple because they wanted $$$$ for 'em and I wasn't going to pay a lot for something I was going to cut down.
