Trap / Skeet Barrel Question.

Post by gWebber »

Hunting around for a second barrel for my Wingmaster.
Currently have 20” no choke.

I’m sure a Ribbed barrel with screw in chokes would be a great way to go, but no luck finding one.

Looking at a 28” Modified Choke for $220 (plus shipping) as a maybe.

Not sure it’s my best choice as far as choke or price for trap or skeet ... which really know very little about.

UPDATE:
Found and hopefully purchased (pending) a 28” Ribbed Express barrel with screw in choke set.

So thoughts and recommendations anyone?

Maybe have your 20" fitted for choke tubes? I have a barrel someone cut to around 26", I'm going to have that done to it.

a 20" barrel isn't optimal for skeet or trap. Most shooters in 12-GA start at 28" and some go to even 32". I shot trap with an 870 Wingmaster with a 28" VR barrel and 1" extended screw-in chokes. Also, you'll find that MOD isn't much good except at 16 yards. For longer handicap or 2nd shot doubles, a tighter chokes is called for. Both my barrels on Beretta o/u have IMP.MOD or LightFULL.

I never shot clays in a serious way, just hunting practice with field guns. So for me whatever barrel I hunted with went to the range. Once in a while I kept score. So if that's the kind of shooting you're doing then any field length and choke would be suitable. But yeah, if you are getting into the sport to maybe get good at it then longer barrels do swing nicely.

Interesting to note I was/am a much better hunter than clay shooter. I speculate I overthink things at the range, whereas the feathers fly without thinking how it happened.

I thought about that , but (and I’m not sure) the muzzle looks kinda thin , it’s a Hastings not Remington barrel and at least 8” cut off I’d guess based on what I could find on the brand.

I may still at least ask my local gunsmith for his opinion.

I’m thinking I’ll just be shooting trap or skeet as a way to practice as the closest ranges are Trap Clubs and there’s good people to learn from.

I found and ordered a 28” with a full set of chokes, so I think that should do the job.

Thanks for deleting the dup post, hit the button twice.

Yes, I was pretty sure 20” I’d be shooting air if I was lucky 😂

Got a 28” with chokes coming.

The 28” I found and ordered has a set of chokes including a “full”. I’ll just be shooting for practice and fun so as long as I hit something no and then , I’m good.

Thanks everyone for the opinions and ideas.

Now that I’ll have a 20” and a 28” with a set of chokes I think I have HD and some fun time shooting covered.
