Houston, Texas & a little TN in the Summers

Post by richg99 »

Howdy, Old guy, new hobby/sport. I just took up clay shooting. I had NO idea how much I was going to love it. My first guns purchased were a couple of handguns last Thanksgiving. Then, some guys near where I spend some Summertime in TN said they were starting a Trap group.

I bought a Yildiz 20 gauge to start me off. It is a low priced Turkish gun sold exclusively by Academy Stores. So far, I've shot Trap twice (poorly) and Skeet 9 times. I can hit some of the flying skeet birds. My Best score has been 18 out of 25.

I have been reading about dedicated Trap guns and decided on the Remington 870 Express Trap. I haven't purchased it yet but will tomorrow. That is assuming that the local gun shop has it in stock. Their website implies that they do. One way or the other, I will be a Remington owner soon.

Thanks for letting me join. regards, richg99

p.s. Does anyone have a suggestion for a very light load shell with #7.5 shot in it? Since I am OLD...I have to be careful of the recoil and someone recommended simply buying lightly loaded shells.

Howdy and welcome aboard. I've been shooting 12 ga trap for several years now, so lemme chime in. Recoil is a direct result and relation to the mass and velocity going out the other end. Equal and opposite, recall? In 12ga, for less recoil, you'd simply drop to 3/4-oz or 1-oz shot loads at a lower velocity like 1145fps or 1200fps. So as you peruse the target loads at your LGS, look for the smaller loads and slower velocities. Anything above 1145fps-ish is good for 16-yard trap, but you might want a lil' faster for handicap distances.
