Hi, all! I just joined the site this morning. I've never owned a shotgun, and I'm considering a Remington 870 express tactical.
Out here in the Democratik People's Republik of Kalifornia (AKA the land of fruits and nuts), they haven't banned guns (yet) and those of us out here who love our freedom and our country are fighting for our rights.
I teach mathematics at the college level, and have been shooting for a year.

Welcome to the forum.
Expresses are good guns if you're not able or willing to spend more on a higher-trim model. They're essentially the same guns, just with lighter-duty finishes, more economical wood or plastic, and maybe one or two more rough edges to break in.
The one thing you do want to be aware of when buying an Express Tactical is that many of them now use a special single-piece 6-round magazine tube. Unlike standard 870s, these will not accept other barrels, they are strictly defense/combat configured models:

If you want more than just a HD gun or tacti-cool plinker, be sure to buy an 870 with the standard 4-round base magazine tube (with or without a factory extension).
