I currently have three 870s in my safe; 1969 20ga Wingmaster, 1977 12ga Wingmaster, and 1999 12ga Express super magnum, and down the road I will inherit my dad's 1951 12ga Wingmaster. I'm intrigued by the idea of having an 870 home defense shotgun but which one to convert? Thinking the 20ga is out because I'd want a 12. Don't want to convert the 1977.....it's a sweet gun! Don't want to convert the classic 1951. Don't want to convert the 1999 because I still hunt.
So the only solution is to buy another 870.......when four is not enough........thankfully my wife won't question it....

The more I test different accessories the more I want to have a second shotgun
I always wanted to have a Remington 870 Marine. Do you like it?

Definitely nice but then again, I like them all! I checked out my dad's 870 today as I'm still trying to confirm the age. The side of the barrel doesn't have 2 letters. It has PYY+ and then the serial number below it. When I enter just the first 2 letters into the serial number lookup on this site it says 1930 or 1974 and I know neither one is right. I emailed Remington a few weeks ago and haven't heard back. Guess I'll call customer service on Monday.

It would be interesting to know what Remington tell you about your shotgun.

Honestly, if you just get a short barrel, you could drop it onto any of your 12ga 870s and have an effective HD shotgun without any permanent modifications.
Remington was using double year letters for barrel date codes during the first handful of years the 870 was being produced. A date code of PYY indicates June 1952.

I called Remington and provided them with the serial number and they also said it was a 1952. Oh well, one from the first year would have been cool but my dad's gun from 1952 is cool too! In addition, the serial number is on the barrel as well.
