Need a good heat shield

Post by mcdeez333 »

It appears my Hogue fore end is rubbing against my ATI heat shield clamp. That ATI heat shield is crap btw.
Is there a good site of rust 870 parts?. Id like a high quality heat shield with the smaller holes.
THANKS

Tacstar makes a heat shield that's supposed to fit a variety of shotguns. No idea if it'll fit better than your current one though, especially with an aftermarket fore-end from another company. You may end up having to modify your fore-end and/or a heat shield to get a setup that works without any interference.

Not a fan of heat shields, personally. I don't know the specs for the ATI, but that Tacstar shield is half a pound of extra mass over the fore-end that doesn't really do anything to make the gun more functional for defensive or hunting applications. In the rare event that I'm running my 870 hard enough at the range for barrel heat to be an issue, I just wear a glove on my off hand.

I have installed a few heat shields of other people and have one on my Winchester 1300 just because I liked how it looked. The heat shield that Mossberg makes is probably the best one on the market, but even it will be difficult to keep in place if you shoot buckshot or slugs. It WILL slide forward under recoil due to the tapered barrel of the 870. On the 870s I put a heat shields on I mounted the barrel in a lathe and turned a straight section for the heat shield to mount on. You will also have to trim the "ears" on the rear of the heat shield to clear the actuation arms of the pump. I generally just cut them off flush with the bottom of the shield as they are not needed and do nothing but scratch the hell out of the rear of the barrel. Depending on which fore-end you have, you may have to shave down the top of it to clear the bottom of the heat shield.
