Pistol grip with stock
Pistol grip with stock
I know there are tons of threads about this but I still haven't been able to make a choice on what grip/stock I want....Just bought a new 870 Tactical and am wanting a AR/M4 style butt stock. The blackhawks are cheap and look like they'd be comfortable but I have read many mixed opinions on them. I have also looked at the Fab Defense products. I'm not sure I need (Want to pay for) the shock absorber versions but the AGR870-FK looks like a solid piece. Any thoughts, opinions, reviews, or new options would be appreciated!

Re: Pistol grip with stock
Have you taken your new 870 out shooting yet? That should definitely be your first step in working out how you want to change the gun's fit - if you want to change anything at all. It'll also help you decide if you really need the extra cost and complexity of a recoil-reducing stock, or if the gun will be comfortable enough with a fixed stock and maybe an upgraded recoil pad (most people are just fine with the latter).

Of course! I took it to the field within the hour I took it out of the store... A recoil-reducing stock isn't needed. I am sure of the pistol grip and am trying to gain the knowledge about other add ons as this will be primarily used for home defense (flashlights, mounts, optics ect.)

Re: Pistol grip with stock
I had a Fab Defense Recoil Reducing Collapsible Folding Stock for a long time. It is an Excellent Stock, and has many features that make it a Great choice. I just wanted you to know, since you asked about it, that if you want a truly Tactical Mil-Spec Stock, this is one of the best and is combat proven. It does indeed reduce recoil and gives you a natural fighting stance when operating your shotgun. The only other Stock on the market that is about the same in quality and performance is the Mesa LEO Recoil Reducing Tactical Stock. Both stocks are very expensive however, i just wanted you to know that the Fab Defense you referred to is "worth the money", it just depends on what you decide what you want, and choose as a stock for your 870.
Good luck and happy shooting!

Thanks for the input!

Just out of curiosity how does the recoil reducing stock work...is it a spring, is it gas, what is it??Waldo_88 wrote:Automag wrote:I had a Fab Defense Recoil Reducing Collapsible Folding Stock for a long time. Re: Pistol grip with stock
It operates quite simply; the aluminum bufer tube which comes out of the pistol grip assembly, and which holds the 6 position stock slides into an aluminum frame, this has a 1" slot milled into it. Inside that is a round machined crossbar attactched to a strong gas piston that runs the length of the buffer tube (rearwards). The round crossbar fits in that notch/slot. If you had one in your hand and pushed back hard onto your shoulder, you would see (and feel) the piston's crossbar moving back the length of the slot and moving back up when you stop pushing back on your shoulder. So bottom line, everytime you fire, the stock sits firmly in your shoulder while the crossbar rides back in the machined aluminum buffer tube's slot, via the gas piston (compressing the piston) in a backward motion, taking the felt recoil out of each shot.Just out of curiosity how does the recoil reducing stock work...is it a spring, is it gas, what is it??
Closer pic of the Stock

I hope that explains it, so you understand and is helpful. BTW the pistol grip has a very strong ergonomic fit to it, and the bottom of the pistol grip can be opened up to store small batteries, allen wrenches, etc. Also the rear of the GL16 stock (what it comes with) opens up via two tabs, allowing storage of batteries and other accessories as well. These storage areas close so tightly, that they would never be able to come open while the gun is being fired.

The Mesa Recoil Reducer that Automag mentioned is double the cost but the best on the market. It utilizes an Enidine hydraulic buffer instead of buffer tube. Enidine is a well respected company With military contracts for recoil suppression systems on a lot of the larger caliber and belt fed weapons systems. Another real nice pistol grip stock, although not AR15/M4/buffer tube style, is the Mesa Tactical Urbino. It also has a short LOP for ease of use when operating with body armor, a chest rig, etc...

Re: Pistol grip with stock
I just wanted to clear something up about the price of the Fab Defense Stocks. They offer two Recoil Reducung Stocks (one folding, one non-folding) cost 280.00 from Mako (Fab Defense's Distibuter). You can, however get these stocks for about 240.00 on Amazon. Then they offer an M4 style non Recoil Reducer for 160.00, and then they offer another "style" with an adjustable Cheekriser for about 130.00 on Amazon. These are all top notch Mil-Spec Stocks, unlike a Blackhawk "Spec Ops" Stock for example. Yes that's my opinion, but i've handled all these stocks, and speak from experience.Good looking gun! The Mesa LEO Recoil Reducing Tactical Stock goes from 280.00 to 300.00 and is, arguably the "best on the market". Both Fab Defense and Mesa make the best pistol grip stocks available today. I know the Isreali army (IDF) uses the Recoil Reducing Fab Defense Stocks on their Military Shotguns. I'm quite sure JBall's information about the uses and applications of the Mesa Endine Recoil Reducing sytems and Pistol Grip Stocks are true and accurate. I also agree that the Mesa Tactical Urbino Pistol Grip Stock (pictured above) is a great option and choice for a reasonable price (I own one too).
My only point is that both the Fab Defense and Mesa LEO Recoil Reducing Pistol Grip Stocks are the best you can get, and to make clear what it costs for the best stocks available. The Mesa Tactical Urbino has recoil reducing properties as well, and is a great stock that is a little more affordable, and is a very good choice for a Pistol Grip Stock.
One more thing, a little off topic. The Isreali Army designs and builds most of their own weapons; The 5.56 Galil, the 9mm Uzi for example, but does use and modify other countries weapons as well, eg. Colt AR-15's, Russian AK's, Remington Shotguns etc. They oufit most of their weapons (Assault Rifles and Shotguns) with all Fab Defense Furniture and Accessories, as Fab Defense is an Isreali Miltary supplier. Mako does'nt make anything, they just sell and distibute Isreali Military parts and accessories for Fab Defense. That's why all Fab Defenses' products are listed as Mil-Spec, because they are actual Military Grade Parts used in Combat regularly.

Sorry Auto, I didn't mean to sound like I was discrediting your post. I honestly don't have any experience with the Mako stocks but I know they make fairly decent products and that the Israeli military defiantly uses a lot of them.Automag wrote:I just wanted to clear something up about the price of the Fab Defense Stocks. I'm sure Automag's recommendations is a good one seeing as its backed with experience. No doubt you will be happy if you choose to go with a either company.
