Receiver rail with rifle sighted barrel

Post by cv0lv0g0 »

I wanted drill and tap my receiver for a optic rail. However I have rifle sighted barrel, so my question is will a rail cut off view of my sights. I really want to have a low profile red dot that way I could keep it on my shotgun and still use my sights when it's off.

I don't have a rifle sighted barrel handy (have one on the way for a build), but if I remember right on other brands I've had the rail would block enough of the sights to make them unusable. Hopefully someone with experience with this on the 870 will chime in and answer you. If not, my barrel should be here Tuesday and I will know the answer then.

You can probably find specs online, or just have someone here measure the height of their top rail to see if you'll be able to peek over it to your rifle sights.

If nothing else, you can always take a top rail off the receiver and put set screws into the holes for builds where you don't want to run an optic.

Receiver rail with rifle sighted barrel

My mesa tactical sureshot side saddle top rail allows the rifle sights to match up perfectly with the top rail. If you want to add anything to the rail you will need a cut out/hollow riser. It should still just barely work, it is really close.

Just thought of this; there are also aftermarket rifle sight elements available that are taller than the stock parts. That might be an option if the factory sights end up being too short.

I have an 20" barrel with rifle sights here, but don't have a rail for the 870. I did lay 5 different rails from my parts box on the receiver and none on them blocked the sights though.

I want to keep the sights I have now. When I bought the barrel I was probably 16 with out any idea how to operate a mill. So it was the best option at the time I would like ghost ring from trijicon but the extra money has already been spent for the rifle sighted barrel so I'm going to keep it that way. This gun is going to get sent off to Dietrich gunsmithy for their master hot blue finish and this shall become a show gun of sorts.

How much space would you say the rail and sights have from each other?

If you all are not familiar with their work here is a Clark's meltdown that they refinished.
