Hello,
I have a Remington 870 Wingmaster. I was just curious how do I remove the magazine retainer in my gun? I'm pretty sure there's a magazine plug because I can only fit 2 shells in the magazine tube. I am trying to remove the plug but I cannot figure out how to remove the retainer. Any tips/advice is greatly appreciated thank you!

Metal or plastic? If metal take a small screwdriver and work around it and pry it out. Plastic, push down rotate 1/4 turn and let come out.

Generally there are 2 ways that the spring is retained (captured) inside the magazine tube. Originally it was done with a metal C-shaped retaining cap. If you have this style, then there are a couple of ways of removing it. The primitive way is to use a screwdriver and carefully pry the C-shaped retaining cap out. The issue with the screwdriver method is that there is the possibility of bending the cap so it won't want to fit back into the magazine tube anymore. My preferred method that I use to keep from deforming the cap is to use a special tool made by Menck, known as the corkscrew tool, which is basically a threaded arbor, which allows you to get ahold of the cap and simply wiggle out the retaining cap without deforming it, which allows it to be reinstalled with no effort.

This is the Menck corkscrew tool. Simply thread it into the C-shaped cap to get ahold of it, and then rock gently in circular pattern to get the retaining cap to work out.

Then about 94 if my memory is correct, Remington started using a plastic plug of sorts, that is serrated on the end, and has a flat screw driver slot in the middle of it. This was done on the magazine tubes that have 2 small indentations just behind the threads for the threaded magazine tube cap that threads on to lock the barrel down. If you have this type, take a flat bladed screwdriver and compress the plastic plug about an inch down into the magazine tube and rotate it a quarter turn either direction until you line up the molded channels of the plug with the dents on the magazine tube, and then slowly back out the screwdriver as the magazine spring should push the retaining cap out of the magazine tube.
