skeet shooting w/870 deer gun

What I have is a 90's era Remington express magnum 12 gauge that was shipped with a 20" slug barrel w/rifle sights and monte carlo stock. Obviously I won't be using that barrel for skeet shooting so I picked up a ribbed 28" aftermarket 12 gauge barrel with 4 chokes.

The barrel is fine the question is when mounting the shotgun the monte carlo stock causes me to be shooting slightly high. In other words I'll try to describe it. When mounted and looking down the receiver and over the barrel at the bead, the barrel is slightly pointing up. My skeet N trap shooting buddies said that I inadvertently made a poor mans trap gun since the 870 trap has a very similar if not the same style stock and that they too shoot slightly high.

What say you?

I have two trap guns, 870 TC Trap and Winchester 101 diamond grade and both shoot high.

Classic trap setups do shoot high, because you're not aiming, you're pointing. But get out there and pull some clays and see how she does. If your range has a patterning board, use that first.

We do have a board used for patterning our guns and pretty much like what everyone says. She shoots slightly high at 40 yards using a skeet choke. I guess the monte carlo stock on the mid 90's deer guns is the same or at least the same dimensions as the trap guns.

There's nothing magical about a stock comb that makes one gun a trap gun and one, well, not. The comb on a trap is to help you keep your head up when shooting, not hunkered down like on a rifle. But a comb is a comb and the only thing that changes is if your hair is pretty and groomed.

RVGshooter - you first mention that you're shooting skeet, then that someone called it a poor mans trap gun.

I just want to be certain that you're not using the two styles interchangeably?
As noted, Trap guns do indeed shoot high by design, as in that game, the clay is traveling away and upwards.
In Skeet, the clay moves perpendicular to most shooting positions, requiring the shooter to 'lead' the target.

I think your setup is probably perfectly usable for Trap!

I know it's been a while, but If you’re looking to try skeet shooting with an 870 deer gun, I’d say it can work, but it might take a little getting used to. The 870 is a tremendous all-around shotgun, but it’s built more for hunting, so you might find it less elegant than something explicitly designed for skeet.

The higher comb helps with aligning the eye for those types of shooting. It’s not a huge issue if you're comfortable with it, but if it feels off, you could consider adjusting your mount or adding a cheek riser to fine-tune the fit. Your buddies are right, it’s similar to how a dedicated trap gun works.
