Extractor upgrade
Extractor upgrade
I've seen more than once that the extractor is one of several 'recommended' upgrades. Is the stock MIM extractor that bad? Do they break a lot? I probably will get one and replace the stock one, keep it as a spare. There was a mod to the extractor in the 870 download to 'radius' it, the pic wasn't too clear, is it to round it a bit to match the diameter of the shell?

Re: Extractor upgrade
ive seen them wear quicker, i shoot close to 50,60k a year so i see the $20 it cost to buy the good one well worth it.Jamie wrote:I've seen more than once that the extractor is one of several 'recommended' upgrades. Re: Extractor upgrade
My MIM extractor was the cause of poor ejecting issues. Ther best money i ever spent upgrading that thing. It even LOOKS better made.

Re: Extractor upgrade
Hi everyone, just got a non-mim extractor for my 870 6 round fixed mag, do i need to do any grinding on the new extractor for it not to scratch or scuff the receiver? I've heard the non-mim will do that. Any answers will be appreciated ..... thanks!
Re: Extractor upgrade
fleetsider, I don't think that something is going to be wrong with receiver. Lots of Remington 870 owners use non-MIM extractors without any problems.fleetsider wrote:Hi everyone, just got a non-mim extractor for my 870 6 round fixed mag, do i need to do any grinding on the new extractor for it not to scratch or scuff the receiver? Re: Extractor upgrade
My 870 has the MIM extractor, and it's been absolutely flawless, even in some pretty severe situations (stuck shells, hard racking, etc). I may replace it someday, but unless things change, it's far down on the priority list.

Turn the gun, port facing up, and eject an empty shell. Does yours kick them out ok?

As long as I work the action smartly, it ejects them fine.Kentactic wrote:Turn the gun, port facing up, and eject an empty shell. Does yours kick them out ok?
Though, since you bring it up, I could see how a higher end extractor could make ejection a little more positive. Never had the MIM extractor fail to pull a shell out though, (except for one time when the shell rim tore).
I don't know, next time I make a big parts order from Remington I may have them throw in an extractor; especially since I have a little more money to spend than I did back when I initially upgraded my internals.
On that topic, does anyone here have a Marine Magnum 870? Remington's parts list describes three 12ga extractors: The MIM Express part, the standard extractor, and a Marine Mag extractor. Last I talked to Remington, I asked after the metallurgy on the Marine Magnum extractor, but the fellow I spoke with didn't know details.

Yeah ive never had an extracting issue with the MIM extractor but beleive it or not it was the root cause of weak Ejecting. The reason was it was not in spec i suspect because the shell was able to ride well off the bolt face on its way out. the non-MIM extractor brought the back of the shell much closer to the bolt face. Essentially it was a tighter ride so it ejected much more positively.
Re: Extractor upgrade
I just got this response for Danny at the Remington on-line customer service website:
"The internal parts for the Marine Magnum are nickel plated to aid in corrosion resistance. The standard 870 internal parts are not plated. The extractor is also plated. F97597 ($12.00) is the factory part number for the extractor and F202281 ($94.00) is the factory part number for the trigger plate assembly."
I had ordered most of the upgrades suggested in the "Guide" (thanks Vitaly!). Guess I'll have to return them to Brownells!
Does anyone know if the plated and non-plated parts are dimensionally the same?
