New Member 870 HD vs tactical

Post by bdcaron »

Shotgun newbie here.

I am looking for a shotgun for home defense. I have settled on two inexpensive models with great reviews.

My question is what is the difference between the two models. They are close to the same price.

The first is the 81197 870 Express Home Defense

The other is the 25077 870 Express Tactical
https://www.remington.com/shotguns/tact ... al-7-round

The Home Defense model description reads "accepts standard Model 870 replacement barrels without modification". I've read there are a lot of parts that can be changed, upgraded, ?.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I take it you've used the "Add to Compare" on Rem's site for a side by side look?

Other than the differences they list and the obvious wood vs synthetic I don't think one is "better" than the other as far as machining and internal parts goes. The extended mag tubes are different, the Tactical is a one piece and the HD is a 2 piece but I don't have an opinion on which one is better.

I do prefer the barrel/mag clamp and the 7 rounds on the HD.

I can’t say this is an “opinion”, it’s just been my preference so far. I like the wood for two reasons ;

1. It just looks nice.
2. You can really crack someone in the head with wood.
