Which 870 is this?

Post by Treefrog »

Hi all, new hunter here, based in Northern Europe.

I have recently purchased a second hand 870 and am really interested to find out what model it actually is. Obviously it is not a Wingmaster but neither does it have 'Express' stamped anywhere, just Remington 870 Super Mag.

The forend extends backwards towards the action and under the chamber, unlike all the Express models that I have seen that are made much shorter.

There are the letters "Rep" "Rep" stamped inside the chamber.

The action seems smooth, have never handled a Wingmaster so could not compare.

Anyone here know anything about this particular model? I would be really interested to hear your thoughts. Many thanks!

The furniture all says Express Synthetic. I know mine has a 3" chamber, but don't know about 3-1/2" Super Mag.

It's an Express. It might not say it on the receiver, but it's clearly got Express furniture and an Express finish.

I believe Remington offered SuperMag 870s in a Wingmaster trim very early on, but that didn't seem to last very long. Pretty much all SuperMag 870s are essentially Expresses. I guess folks looking for a 3.5"-chambered pump mostly wanted a utilitarian piece that they could drag through the mud without feeling bad, rather than a really nicely-finished show piece for fair-weather upland hunting.
