Mossberg stand-off barrel

Post by ProjectCamaro »

Anyone have an experience with the Mossberg stand-off barrel? I really like the looks of it and am thinking about buying it but I was hoping for some real work experience or expertise on it.

is your 870 threaded for chokes? if so, you could just get the tactical choke for it and it will look just like that for a lot less money.

No it’s not.

Plus I don’t like the look of the tactical choke, it looks tacked on and makes the barrel about two inches longer.

Since the Mossberg breaching barrel is one-piece, with the stand-off integral to the barrel, it's 18.5" overall - including the stand-off. An 18.5" barrel with a separate breaching choke installed would be longer, since the barrel has to be 18.5" even if the choke is removed in order to avoid being treated as an NFA item. The Remington breaching choke adds about 2 inches to the length of a barrel, so an 18.5" barrel with the choke would effectively become a 20.5" barrel.

The advantage of the one-piece Mossberg breaching barrel is a shorter overall length with a breaching stand-off. The advantages with the separate breaching choke are the extra barrel length, plus the flexibility to remove the stand-off and install a different tube to tune the pattern and/or shorten the gun's length when desired. For practical applications, the removable breaching choke would be the one to pick, as a stand-off is only useful for cool points (and not all folks will actually find it cool anyway), and you're best off without it for any practical application. There is virtually no reason a civilian would ever need to breach a door with their defensive shotgun, and even if that situation did arise, breaching can be done just fine without a stand-off.

I've got a Mossberg-mfr. 18-1/2in. cylinder bore barrel on my 870. It is nice. I like it fine. As I recall, it was less expensive. The most recent barrel replacement I got was for an S&W/Howa 3000 870 clone. That was really cheap!

Thank you very much for the reply. I was hoping someone with experience would chime in.

I have the express tactical and I don't completely trust a barrel when you're almost expected to have to polish it. I don't hear the same issue with Mossberg which is why I was thinking about going with one of their barrels.
