Hello to all...

Post by Maggie's Dad »

Hello to all. It is my total pleasure to join your forum and I ask that you forgive my inexperience when it comes to how to go about structuring and sending a message upon this venue simply because I am not quite certain about how to post messages that will meet up to your standards and to your expectations, but I will try my best to make it happen! :?

Not being familiar with the amount of information that you would like to be given about a new member, I will attempt to pass onto you a brief sum of my experiences and/or a tad bit of the history that I have enjoyed with the Remington product. Notably, I am 72 years of age and I have enjoyed being the proud owner of Remington firearms for most of my lifetime, albeit, most of my experience has been with the Remington model 700 Rifle, however; when it comes to pump action shotguns, I will gladly admit to you that the Remington 870 has forever been my absolute favorite. Novices and aficionados alike will confirm that for many, many generations the Remington 870 has forever been the shooter's choice, not only for its ease of operation and for its smoothness, but for the envied design the Remington 870 has earned when comparing it to other brands that just don't have that Remington touch and, exclusively, that stylish, solely owned, Remington look!

Back in the mid 1970s, I had purchased a brand new Remington 870 Wingmaster for my son. It was a 12 gauge with a 26" barrel and for my son to have an adjunct barrel, I had purchased a rifled slug barrel to go with it.. Then, nearly 25 years later (sometime around 2002), I bought for myself a new 870 Express 12 gauge with a black synthetic stock. Actually, it was the 870 Super Express Magnum which is capable of handling 3-1/2" shells. Since then, it has pretty much been sitting idle in my gun cabinet because I haven't been a hunter for quite a few years. Regretfully, I had an aortic heart valve issue whereby my aortic heart valve had become defective and, subsequently, it had been replaced with an organic pig valve.

Anyway, the other day, I got to looking at my 870 and decided that it might be nice to convert it into a home defense 870. For starters, I've already purchased for it a new Parkerized Remington made 18" police barrel which is actually a fixed improved cylinder barrel with rifle sights. Too, I've purchased a new Volquartsen tool steel extractor, and a Magpul SGA adjustable Butt Stock, but I have not yet purchased a new forearm because I cannot find any manufacturer who makes a forearm that will properly function with the Super Magnum action. Supposedly, most forearms that are designed for the Remington model 870 will not properly function because of the 870 Super Magnum's receiver's size or because of the length of the Super Magnum's magazine tube ?

Should any of you fellow members be so kind to offer any suggestions as to what can be done to resolve my problem, your suggestions will be very much appreciated and I would like to thank you in advance for your replies ! In other words, can any of you recommend the name of a forearm that will properly function on 12 gauge Super Magnum 870 pump action shotgun ?

Many thanks and Best Regards,

~ Doug ~

I'd really like to get more hands-on experience with this, but my understanding is that it's not an issue of any dimensions (externally, SuperMag receivers and mag tubes are the same as other 12ga 870s), but that the fore-end has a little bit more travel than other models. This reportedly means that some fore-ends will hit the front of the receiver before the bolt is all the way back, which could potentially - though not necessarily - cause function problems. However, this does not seem to be a major problem. I've seen plenty of aftermarket fore-ends on SuperMags, and very few reports of issues. And even if the fore-end does touch the receiver, and the difference is enough to cause short-stroke malfunctions, it would be a very simple matter to shave down the areas making contact until the fore-end can make its full stroke.

Also, why do you feel you need a new fore-end? Are you looking to attach a light?
