Alternative to magpul stock?

Post by SamDBL »

So I saw a Moss 500 at the gun shop the other day. It was outfitted with magpul stock and fore end everyone is putting on their stuff now. I was pleasantly blow away with how short it appeared with that stock. I know the 500 barrel was 18.5. But it was overall much shorter than my 18" 870 by a good margin. I wasn't planning on changing the stock on my 870 HD. But I am obsessed with shorter shotguns. However, I don't want to pay the high price of an SBS. And I dont like the limited functionality or looks of a straight pistol grip. The magpul is cool. But I'm wondering if there are any other options for less than that that would achieve the same purpose of shortening the overall length.

There are a number of stock options that have reduced lengths of pull, including factory youth stocks, or special short offerings from brands like Hogue & SpeedFeed, just to name a couple. Standard LoP for 870s is 14", but youth or short stocks can be had with 13" or 12" LoPs.

I've got the Hogue short 12 inch LOP stock on one of my 870's and have one also for my Mossberg 500. I highly recommend them. They can be found at a decent price alone or with the rubberized front grip as a set.

Some manufacturers offer collapsible stocks that allow you to adjust the length of pull, thereby shortening the overall length when the stock is fully collapsed. Examples include the Magpul SGA Stock and the ATI T3 TactLite stock. These stocks often come with adjustable cheek risers and recoil pads, adding versatility and comfort.
