What parts should be replaced in a never fired 1978 12ga mag

Post by Scattered »

It's is a 870 Wingmaster 3" magnum. What I'm interested in and am hoping for is a list of all the upgrades Remington has released since 1978, especially the ones that make the gun work more efficiently.

TIA

P.S. Should I have posted this in some other forum, such as Repair and Gunsmithing?

This forum is fine.

The only major upgrade Remington has made since the 1970s is the flex-tab action redesign. There have been a couple other tweaks, but nothing that meaningfully impacts the gun's function or reliability. The flex-tab update keeps the gun from jamming up if a shell slips between the slide assembly and the carrier while the action is closed, and thus is recommended if this gun will be used for defensive/combat duty, or other applications that require fast reloads and no hang-ups. For general hunting, sporting, plinking, or woods defense, the old-style action should serve just fine.

Thanks Synchronizer. I have a picture of an 870 hammer that I'd like you to see. Is there some way I can insert a picture in a message on this board?

How often do you check the messages for your YouTube videos? I'm thinking of video #4 in particular (Trigger Pin Detent Springs....).

TIA

I've just learned that what I was calling the hammer is apparently the carrier dog. I say apparently because I sure as heck can't tell for sure from the drawing in the Remington owner's manual.

So let's assume I have a picture of a pitted carrier dog that I'd like you to see and perhaps comment on.

Instructions for attaching and/or uploading images here on the forum can be found in this topic. If you want to show and discuss images, this would be a better place for it than YouTube.

Leaving a comment, either on one of my videos or my channel page, is the best way to get a hold of me on YouTube. For whatever reason, YouTube doesn't reliably notify me about new messages, and about half of them get flagged as spam even before that. I have seen your comment on my video, and I've been meaning to respond to it. Sorry, I'm usually better about that, but I've either been working or shoulder-deep in a Jeep these past several days, and haven't spent much time on the computer.

Synchronizer As I've said in my comments on your YouTube channel I can't thank you enough for the time and effort you've put in to making what in my opinion are the best 870 videos out there. So first things first: how to repay you for your efforts.

When I watch your videos on my computer I don't see any advertisements. However, I recently bought a Sony blu-ray player (BDP-S1500 ~$75 @ Walmart) and connected it to my router via an ethernet cable. Now when I fire up the blu-ray I have access to Youtube and I can watch your videos but now when I watch Youtube videos sometimes advertisements of varying length come up (FWIW - I've found that by hitting the return key and reselecting the video I can either get an advertisement that's much shorter in length or if I'm persistent, I can avoid an advertisement altogether).

Now for my question: If, when I go to watch one of your videos and a commercial comes up, do receive some money for my watching that commercial and if so is the amount that you receive dependent on the length of the video? If that's the case then when I'm watching your stuff I'll be flipping though the advertisements not looking for the shortest one but the longest.

Picture of the carrier dog

Post by Scattered »

A brief summary: The never fired, never oiled 870 Wingmaster appears to be in perfect condition but when I tore it down I noticed that the carrier dog was pitted and discolored. I sprayed the gun with CLP and when I wiped it off I found a small amount of orange on the white cloth. Because of the pitting on the carrier dog and the orange on the cloth I assumed that bad things were happening (rust) so I drenched all metal parts with CLP and left the parts in that condition.

I sent a query to Remington about the orange and they've responded as follows:

"...If the firearm was new and never used or cleaned it would have a packing component that we use called cosmoline for rust prevention. When wiped off the firearm it looks like a reddish brown color some mistake for rust. If indeed it is rust and not cosmoline CLP is a good product to use to remove and protect from further damage...."

So I'm now hopeful that it's just cosmoline because other than the orange I see no evidence of rusting - unless the discoloration and pitting on the carrier dog is actually rusting.

Since by merely changing the barrel the 870 can either be a home defense weapon or used for hunting I'm going to be doing the flex-tab, non MIM extractor, etc. upgrades and buying a 2nd barrel. Also, if I replace the carrier assembly the carrier dog is automatically replaced too but that doesn't tell me if there are any other parts (such as springs) in the 37 year old trigger assembly that should be replaced too.

Synchronizer - If you think this project would make a good video I'd consider transporting to weapon to you. If not, then that's O.K. too.

That does kind of look like corrosion pitting at the bottom of the carrier dog. It could also conceivably be a manufacturing defect - someone at the factory didn't have the riveting jig lined up right, or something like that. Either way, as far as I can tell, the carrier dog still seems perfectly serviceable. As long as it moves freely about the carrier dog pin, cosmetic blemishes there shouldn't have any effect on function. Besides, as you pointed out, you're going to be replacing the carrier assembly anyway as part of the flex-tab update.

As for the rest of the trigger plate assembly, if the gun was never fired, all the springs and other wear parts should be just fine. If you're concerned, it certainly wouldn't hurt to have a gunsmith give it a quick looking-over, but barring corrosion or other environmental deterioration, the parts should be just as sound as they were back in 1978.

I'll be darned if I can figure out how YouTube's ads work or how I get paid based on them. I took the time to learn about the the different types of ads so I could avoid the ones that seriously detract from a video. Beyond that, I can't make heads or tails of their inner workings. I think some of the reward is based on viewer responses that vary depending on ad type; clicks for some, maybe, or watching a skippable ad all the way through. From the reports I get, skippable video ads account for a vast majority of my earnings; other types seem to pay at a better rate, but are served or responded to less often for whatever reason. Google & YouTube's "help" pages are extremely vague about how all this works, so I may be completely off.

As for when you don't see ads, I think that happens when Google hasn't sold enough advertising to cover all the video views they're getting - or something like that. I think traffic sources and device types also play into what ads - and what types of ads - are served, which could explain the different experience on your Blu-Ray player. Or maybe your computer's browser has an ad-blocking add-on running.

All I know is I enable ads on the videos that don't have too much un-cited copyrighted stuff in them, Google takes a nice juicy bite out of the gross revenue, and I slowly build up earnings in my AdSense account. When I eventually have enough to withdraw, I'm planning on using it to fund an in-depth video on the flex-tab conversion.

Yes, private messages can be accessed right below the header, or from your user control panel. If I did it right, this link should take you right there.
