New to shotguns

Post by KUSA »

Greetings,

I'm not exactly a new member as I joined a while back. However I just bought my first shotgun.

I always upgrade everything I get so I decided to start with the 870 Express. I am looking forward to personalizing it by changing everything. I will probably put a tactical touch to it but I expect I'll use it more for hunting turkey with it. It currently has a 28 inch barrel that should be great for hunting.

Here is a pic of it. Nothing special about it now other than the potential it has. Image

Although I am new to shotguns, I have quite a bit experience with AR15s and Remington 700s. I've competed in several tactical shoots and usually score in the top percent. Here are are couple of my rifles. Image

I think this is the place to be for information on 870s and I look forward to learning from everyone.

Class barrel length, but don't be afraid to take it shorter for turkey!

At first I'm thinking about putting ghost ring fire sights on it, a 2 or 3 round extension tube, and an 18 or 20 inch barrel.

Magazine extensions and barrels are easy to change around, but one issue you might run into with ghost-ring sights is that many of the kits out there have rear elements that install on the gun's receiver. So each time you want to change to your vent-rib barrel to go bird hunting or clay-shooting, you'll have to unscrew that rear sight as well.

By the way, that's a sweet looking bolt gun a couple posts up.

I'm not sure how I'm going to do the the rear sight and the vent-rib barrel yet. I want a setup where I can have the front sights on both barrels to be compatible with the rear sight.

Barrel ribs don't require a rear sight, they're meant to be used on their own. If you want to be able to keep using your vent-rib barrel without removing & reinstalling the rear sight you use with another barrel, I would suggest a barrel that has both the front and rear elements attached to it. This is how most rifle-sight 870s are set up:
