870 duracoat?? mesa tactical??

Post by pumpingpower »

Ive never been on any forums but have good knowledge to share along with questions to have answered. so take it easy on me i guess

I got a 870 express new 3 yrs ago, all black 28'' barrel with synthetic furniture (not a wood guy). Definitely put my 870 through hell and back in hunting and ill vouch for an 870 any day any time. Got a binelli SBEII for hunting and now i turned it the 870 into a typical pistol grip. I have two questions.

1) i really wana get the mesa tactical 8 shot side saddle. but im a lefty and it looks like the shells loaded up will get in the way or be ucomfortable to say the least. im using a tac star pistol grip. (wana get a vindicator or speedfeed not sure) Can anyone clarify the side saddle please?? (if you have it and your a righty, i guess just hold it lefty, loaded up and see i guess)

2) i love the marine magnum look but dont wana pay 900 new for an otherwise 400 new shotgun that i likely wont ever take to a marine environment lol i dont even care for boating, and dont wana buy the 500 dollar marine mossberg (wtf is a mossberg) i wana chrome duracoat the reciever/mag tube/barrel because the finish on my gun is worn hard, i bought this as a workhorse gun. Does anyone have experience with chrome duracoat? does the finish hang tough? it looks good as hell but i want to know performance im not new to painting. skill is there, so is money. just not sure if its worth the effort and shipping time and 6 week curing process to chrome duracoat my american pride. attatched the only photos i could find of what it looks like.

thanks in advanced.

if someone wants to sell a good condition mesa 8 shot side saddle just leave your email i guess.

Are you running a pistol-grip stock, or a pistol-grip only?

Looking at the 8-round sidesaddle, I can see how it might get in the way.

If you're running a pistol grip, that would put your hand lower, which should help some. I'd imagine it would also depend on your reloading technique, whether you store shells base-up or -down, and what length shells you intend to carry there. I think you mentioned in another thread that your 870 was a SuperMag model. If you're looking to pack 3.5" shotshells, that might be a problem even with a pistol grip. I don't have one to check myself.

Here's a thought though. If the 8-shell carrier won't work, how about two 4-shell carriers, one on the left side and another on the right? That would give you the same number of rounds on the gun, but the left-side 4-shell carrier puts the rearmost shell ahead of the trigger. This setup would also be better-balanced than having eight shells on one side (easily more than a pound of added weight with 3" or 3.5" magnums). You might have to get creative with the fasteners to install both on the same gun, but I'm sure it's possible.

well first id like to say thanks for the great reply. im running a tacstar pistol grip only. it was free to me and it is such a comfortable grip but recoil is 100% felt, no recoil reducing at all. i was debating on doing a speedfeed pg or a pahymayr vindicator pg after i duracoat and side saddle the gun. i only shot two supermag shells and its kindof like holding a pump action howitzer LOL. i intend on putting magnum shells in the side saddle, i wont be reloading from the side saddle they will just be emergency shells so reload speed doesnt matter to me, but now you got me thinking

i want the 8 shot AND the 4 shot on the other side. are they both mesa tactical? if so then im doing it no doubt. (im a "everything needs to match" guy" currently have tacstar tube mag +2, tacstar shitty side saddle i hate it, and tacstar pistol grip)

please send me a link for the 4 shot left side saddle

and as far as weight goes heavier is less felt recoil so an extra pound from two side saddles and 12 3'' 00buck shells will be nice. what about sling setups? this is going to be my backup gun (saving for robinson XCR) please let me know what works good for sling mounts and a good sling

now all we need is some input on the duracoat and a 20,000 tax return for our list of toys that always grows LOL

Yes, those are all Mesa tactical products. Click on the pictures above to go to the product pages, they're all hyperlinks.

I'm not really the person to ask about slings. I rarely use them because they only seem to get in the way. When I need to pack my gun extended distances through the woods, I just use some $5 cheapo sling, and I usually take it off when I get to where I'm shooting. I can't imagine something that costs $50 doing that job much better.

I do have a Hogue pistol grip that I use for fun only (apart from maybe a dedicated breaching shotgun, I see absolutely no benefit to having a pistol grip without a stock). I've used an old VHS camcorder sling as a single-point with that.

Not sure about the Marine, but here's how I painted my Remington 870 Express:

That's because Duracoat is crap. GunKote is a LOT better. Degrease part THOROUGHLY with brake cleaner or similar then degrease again, warm parts slightly in an oven, apply with el cheapo airbrush from Harbor Fright tools and bake at 325 degrees for at least one hour. http://www.kgcoatings.com/coating-prote ... oducts.php

Duracoat is nothing more than Polane from Sherwin Williams decanted into very small bottles with the price increased by about 1000%. Its also NOT very hard wearing so the name is misleading.....

honestly im quite intimidated to spray my reciever and barrel with that cerakote only because putting them in the oven sounds a bit risky to me... if someone can clarify and maybe "ease the scared child into taking his medicine" ill probably end up doing it. i heard a million good and a million bad reviews on duracoat. cerakote sounds like it has less bad about it

I'm no expert on gun paints, but I do have a background in materials science (among other things), and I can tell you that the 120 - 150 degrees C maximum curing temperatures prescribed for Cerakote are way too low to affect the microstructure of normal steels. I don't know the specific alloys Remington uses for their receivers and barrels, but your basic iron-carbon alloys won't start changing phases until you get above 700 degrees C.

Though I've never used gun paint, I have designed and built prototype casting equipment made from austenitic 304 stainless with a bake-on epoxy coating. Those parts were intended to deflect molten aluminum spills, so they handled a trip through the oven just fine.
