Slug gun cantilever best scope plus extended mag question

Post by PSuarez »

I have a 23" rifled slug barrel and I'm way early asking this for next deer season. I'm not a big fan of the scope that came with it. There's a lot of brush here in hilly VA as most hunting areas! Well, the scope is great 7x32 if you have a perfect line of sight....say a practice target LOL. Anyways, any suggestions of a scope that will mount to the cantilever no problem? Red dot..anything that will be accurate to 75-100 yards. I use horandy sst slugs and they make an awesome grouping at 100 yards. But need a scope that's more easily usable.

Now about the extending mag...its not really necessary. I'm not a home defense guy or anything. Of course its a gun and can be used for that. I would like to know if there's anyone who makes a quick disconnect at a reasonable price...I saw MAG had one for 89$!!! What the heck.. Anyways if you can please help :)

The great thing about the 870 is its versatility. I have a 28" straight bore, the 23" rifled bore, and would like to get a 18.5 or 20" straight bore as well. The idea is to simply swap out barrels and ammo for different hunting. Thanks!

So, you're looking for a "quick-disconnect" extension? Not sure what you mean by that. 870 magazine extensions aren't fundamentally difficult to install and remove (apart from the first-time modifications required on certain newer models), but some setups are simpler than others, and clamp-on accessories tend to make things a lot more of a hassle.

How much capacity do you want to add, and are there any other accessories you want to run on the front of the gun?

I have the remington +3 extension on it right now. I'd like to have a decent flashlight mount and 20" smooth bore barrel or 18.5" at some point. I guess I answered my own question (yesterday after I thought about it a bit). Even with the clamp/swivel from remington on it. I'd still need to take of the extension to get a barrel swap in smoothly at the range. It's just not possible to leave it on and do any of that. Sounds like the best bet is just buy a second 870 haha. Not that I can right now...

So any ideas on scopes?

You will have to take the extension off in order to change barrels, but unless you're reconfiguring the gun every hour, it's really not that much of a hassle. Even two-piece extensions that require a clamp or bracket can be removed and reinstalled at the range or in the field with a basic multitool. I do it all the time. And you always have the option of just running a magazine cap or a single-piece extension for hunting or recreational shooting. These can be set up to let you switch barrels in seconds without any tools at all.

Thanks for the reply :) I found another solution....bought a 870 Police Magnum...so I'll leave one set up for slug hunting and magnum for small game, rabbit, squirrel. It's rifle sighted and 18" hopefully with some good shot I'll get some decent yardage and a nice pattern. The dog gone police magnum was totally restored with bells and whistle extra's for a super good price so I grabbed it.... I'm a big fan of Horandy I'll just have to see what works for shot.

Thanks for the update. I think if I had it all to do over again..I'd go with a Wingmaster and have the different barrels with no extensions..but yeah they are not hard to remove anywhere :)
