Factory mag extention question
Re: Factory mag extention question
Also have a +3 blued Choate, 1-piece design, which came with that 20" bbl

Re: Factory mag extention question
However, another +3 Choate-made has failed me a few weeks ago (no danger, just simply fell apart, launching the spring a few feet away)
Re: Factory mag extention question
Some close-ups of Remington coupler
Re: Factory mag extention question
+3 on an 18" bbl extends, but does not affect the shot. I have seen (Taran Tactical?) setups for some competitors where tube were extending about a foot. This extending does affect OAL, if it matters (say, for HD setup, where 18" bbl was specifically chosen to shorten the overall length).
Remington store is out of "kits" (tube+coupler+spring+bracket), but individual components are available, last time i checked (not all for +2/+3 and blue/park-ed), however, "kitting" all together cost more than a kit.
I really liked that +3 Choate which came with my 20", until a newer one (see pix above) failed apart. After closer look, the older one seems to be soldered to the coupler, as opposed to the failed one which was just pressed in / staked (feels like). And, there is no way to check the gap between mag tube and extension. Remington's setup will ensure no gap.
For some reason, the pictures were rotated 90 degrees, am unable to "fix".
Edited 1/24/22 to correct some typos.

Re: Factory mag extention question
Fantastic- thanks for all of the photos and detailed descriptoins as well. I have not seen the newer 2-piece remington in person anywhere, I think they must be relatively new to boot. I am likely going to go with a +2, but this will definitely help in the decision.
Re: Factory mag extention question
There is always an option to have "flush" set, and a separate longer tube only for range fun. Coupler, bracket, and spring are same for +2 and +3. Longer ones will need a longer spring. That's why I have such a "collection". (Actually, got too many by mistake.)

Re: Factory mag extention question
On the hunt myself for a two piece type plus 3 to mate with my 20” barrel.
So far I’m getting the feeling it’ll be a manufacturer other than Remington just due to availability

Yes, pickings are slim in just about every category related to firearms and ammunition as of late. During normal times there are quite a few gun show/swap meet type events arond here in the fall, we'll have to see if they take place this year.
Again, thanks for all the info and this willl certainly aid in the hunt.
Re: Factory mag extention question
Folks, i got them from Remington online store. Piece-by-piece becomes a bit pricier than the kit (all kits are out), but should be available. Check them out.
I ordered too many (there was a logic then, now not cannot recall, and see no need in all of those). Springs, too. If you are up to it, you can get them from me for the cost (have to add that tax, though), plus shipping to you. I have no brackets, though - they were either out, or too costly for me at $25 to $37 each. Otherwise, i will return them back to Rem.
