If its not, my Son would be able to hold it better than the 28" that's on it right now and I wouldn't have to change it back and forth as much. I could just use the 20" for the house and the 28" for Trap. Originally I was going to get a 18.5 for the house but if a 20" would work it would be perfect. An inch and a 1/2 isn't that big of a difference unless, well you know. lol
A 20" barrel should be fine for turkey/HD double duty. Barrel length with a shotgun is mostly about balance and handling, modern shotshells won't lose significant power until you get extremely short - shorter than is usually possible with an 870. You'll want to find one with sights that'll work for both roles, like rifle sights or a vent-rib (the latter might need to be a custom job, there aren't a lot of 12ga 20" vent-rib options out there), and interchangeable choke tubes would be a good idea too. Chokes for turkey hunting have very tight constrictions, and defensive ammo like buckshot does better out of more open chokes like Improved Cylinder or Modified (your 28" barrel likely came with at least one of those tubes).

Got to love how flexible an 870 is, right? There's almost no reason to own more than one unless you want different gauges.

Very nice. My dad's gun is a 12ga Model 37 pump, but I have a friend who owns an old SxS 20ga Ithaca. Sweet little thing with a Mod x IC choke setup. She and I both use our 870s for trap, but she'll bring out that little 20ga occasionally, so I get to admire it and have a chance at beating her score.

I've killed many turkeys and none have complained about my short barrel. I hope I'm quoting an article correctly in that most of the powder is burned within the first 15" of th barrel. I love the shorter barrels on all my shotguns and use my 21" barrel for turkey, pheasant and prairie chicken. Most of the time I'm just carrying it around so the shorter barrel is slightly less weight and easier to maneuver. I also like English stocks for carrying but have yet to find a good deal on an 870 special field. Maybe my wife will get me one for Christmas?

The articles I've read on the subject usually give the length as around 12", though I'm sure there are faster- or slower-burning powders used that give that figure some variance.

Sounds like you mainly want a special field stock, not necessarily the entire gun. Those pop up on auction sites from time to time, and as far as I know, should be compatible with standard 870 receivers. I also came across a guy who converted a spare Express semi-grip stock into a straight stock:

Finding and customizing a take off would probably be the easiest on the wallet. However, I'm liking that Akita though. Looks like it's going to be the one. Thanks for all the help Fellas!!

Happy to help. We'd love to hear what you think of the Akita if you go through with it. It's one of very few (too few, if you ask me) semi-grip 870 stocks with on-the-fly LoP adjustment, so any experiences and thoughts you have would be helpful to others who are considering it.

I have been looking at the Akita too. I have it on my birthday wishlist along with the tactical forend.

Ditto.

Shouldn't be too tough to shoot one of those fore-ends with some gun paint to get it to match the dark earth stock.
