Mystery barrel - 870 18.5" XS RS low profile?

Post by tom »

I just purchased this barrel, but I'm little puzzled because the package doesn't have any model number and there's no stamp on barrel (date stamp I would expect on a remington barrel).

I took some pictures here -> http://imgur.com/a/6ySAh of the barrel + packaging and a strange "REP" (?) marking on it. Only markings on the barrel are

(right side) REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILION, NY
(left side) [star shape] 12 GA 2 3/4 " OR 3" IMP CYL

Inside the barrel I can barely make out a stamp looking mark (picture in the album above) that looks like "REP" or "RSP".

The shop told me it's a Remington barrel, 18.5" IC with low profile rifle sights and said they didn't have a model number. I was hoping this would be this one:

F249630AS V-3 870 BBL 12/18.5 IC RS XS

Does anyone recognize if this is the same barrel or if I got duped and should return this?

EDIT: The REP I guess is "Remington English Proof" although very faint?

That looks like a standard 870 Police barrel with the low-profile rifle sights.

Barrels aren't usually stamped with part numbers, but you could see if there's some kind of packing slip in the box. The parts list descriptions aren't very explicit, but that's a 12ga magnum barrel with a fixed IC choke and XS rifle sights. Unless it's something other than 18.5" long, I don't see anything that contradicts that description.

What exactly is your problem with it? All standard 12ga barrels are interchangeable, and if it says "Remington Arms Company" on the side, it's a genuine Remington barrel. Were you trying to order something with different sights?

Yes, this was the model I was after. I think I was just confused that there were no label, packing slip or anything - that would have indicated the part number.

Great info here.

I have been looking for the low profile sight as featured on this barrel. Is this sight system made by XS?

If so, is it available as a stand alone part from XS or only on Remington barrels? I was searching the XS website and was not able to locate it.

Looks like the leaf is adjustable for windage. Does it adjust for elevation as well?

Thanks in advance for any additional info!

Yes, the sights are XS - they have a small "stamp" on them with "XS" on it. The barrel model number is F249630AS (you can find reference here http://www.remington.com/pages/support/ ... ation.aspx - Parts Price List: F249630AS V-3 870 BBL 12/18.5 IC RS XS $225.57 )

The rear sight looks to be windage only adjustable. There's two small holes on top of the rear sight for tiny allen screws, so I imagine you would just loosen them up and move the rear left/right. I was lucky and this was dead on from first shell. Nice thing is the sights align perfect with my wingmasters original stock, because it's practically as low as the bead sight on the 28" barrel it came with.

Here's the barrel at midway - http://www.midwayusa.com/product/814319 ... fle-sights

I think they have some options at XS for "dovetail" equipped barrels - http://www.xssights.com/Products.aspx?CAT=8270 , but I don't have any experience on those.

Thanks again for all of the info. This has been very helpful. That may be the ideal sight for my needs. I originally saw it on the AI&P site but couldn't find it on the XS website.

I just emailed XS Sights to see if they offer that sight package retail.

My guess is that if XS does offer this sight package it will be without the front or rear sight bases a la their standard rifle sights which attach to factory sight bases...assuming that the customer is simply replacing the factory rear leaf and front sight with the XS components.

Thanks again!
