How can I tell if my 870 20 ga uses the 12 ga receiver?

if it is the same size as a normal 12ga 870 and the barrel has a big step from from where then chamber area is to the rest of the bbl then its 12/20 gun
if your gun is the same side as a 7400/7600 7615 rifle then its a newer 20ga shotgun

A quarter will pass through the barrel's magazine tube ring and the serial # ends with x or n I think.
