I'm Henry and I live in the South suburbs of Chicago.
I'm fairly new to guns in general (less than a year). I acquired the 4 firearms (Colt .38 Special, Walther Luger P38 9mm, Ithaca Model 49 Lever Action .22LR, Remington 11-87 Semi-auto 12 Gauge) when my BIL passed on. So, I wanted to be safe AND informed, so we went for a 8-hour Firearms Safety & Training Course (w/Arizona & Florida CCW). We need an additional 8 hour class for the Illinois CCW. We even got a membership at a range that we really like. We've made it there several times already.
I was just addicted to cigars...and now thanks to the recent acquisition, shooting is included! Having 2 very expensive hobbies is not good, BUT having the wife enjoying the shooting part helps. So, I can blame her for the latter...just don't tell her I said that.
We've been wanting to get a CCW or house weapon for several months now. I wanted a pump action shotgun for added "pump effect" that lets anyone in earshot know they better bug out! I did some research on various firearms and wanted to get something versatile and customizable. We went to several ranges to rent quite a variety of guns to see what we were looking for. Luckily, we both liked the same ones. We were expecting to buy one or the other next year with our tax refund. Well, that went out the window yesterday went we went to the Gander Mountain Firearms Superstore in Merriville, IN. We are now waiting on the delivery to our local Gander Mountain for the 2 newest members of the family...
-Remington 870 Express Magnum 12 Gauge Pump Shotgun/Slug Combo
-Para Ordnance 1911 GI Expert Stainless .45 ACP
We can't wait to head to the range to practice with our newest "toys."

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you're wasting no time in getting into the shooting hobby.
The 870 is a great gun that easily transition between HD and hunting/sporting, but I wouldn't discount that 11-87. No pump to short-stroke, and the gas system helps to break up and soften the 12ga recoil. Just find a buckshot load that cycles reliably, and all you have to do is point & shoot. Sure, you can't do the pump-stroke for dramatic effect, but if you wait to load your gun until the bad guys are paying attention, you should probably rethink your HD strategy.
