Hey y'all,
I'm a Security Forces Sergeant stationed at F.E. Warren AFB (what we call The Rocket Ranch) in Cheyenne, WY. I have a fairly large collection of assorted firearms to include 3 variations of 870's for hunting. last weekend I picked up an 870 tactical from the base exchange for a different kind of use. Figured since I'm into 4 of them now I might as well join the forum here and maybe learn some and share some. So hello from Wyoming.

Welcome to the forum.
So, is this a retired military 870?stratotrev wrote:last weekend I picked up an 870 tactical from the base exchange for a different kind of use.

Thanks for the welcome, and no it isn't. I wish it was, especially since we just received new ones for duty and had to turn in all of our trusted oldies. Most of the BX's have a gun counter these days, just so happened they had some pretty good deals going for labor day, including the one I had been eyeing. So I just went ahead and picked it up...Synchronizor wrote:Welcome to the forum.

As a side note, I sure would like to find out where the DRMO auction that's going to be selling my old reliable is located. I would definitely make an appearance for that.

Does the USAF actually do that? Sounds like an awesome place to pick up an 870, especially an 870 you've used and know you can trust.stratotrev wrote:As a side note, I sure would like to find out where the DRMO auction that's going to be selling my old reliable is located. Do y'all use the 870 MCS there, or the more standard M870?

Well, they do do it, however, most of the time it's on a larger scale and they are all sold in bulk to larger companies like security, or firearms dealers. It's not necessarily meant for individuals. However, every once in a while you can get lucky and get in on one. It HAS happened, but it isn't often. It's kind of a pipe dream for those of us that would like to hold on to our long time "best friend" duty weapons.Synchronizor wrote:Does the USAF actually do that? All of the old ones we turned in were all just the standard M870, and all of the newer one's we just received are MCS. Bear in mind all used of course, as the Air Force is always behind in weapons acquisition and never receives new ones out of the chute.

Well, they're 870s, so used shouldn't be a major point of concern.stratotrev wrote:All of the old ones we turned in were all just the standard M870, and all of the newer one's we just received are MCS. If it's not a huge national security violation, we'd love to see some pictures and info on the MCS. I for one would be interested in knowing where the barrel guide rings are located for the shorter magazine tube, and if the quick-change stock system can be fitted to standard 870s.

Agreed, I don't foresee any issues at all with any of them. They actually seem to be in pretty nice shape for service used, minus a couple that have obviously seen some real action.Synchronizor wrote: Well, they're 870s, so used shouldn't be a major point of concern.

Also, I will see what I can do. I'm the armory assistant NCOIC, and the weapons and ordinance NCO. The only holdup is that phones/cameras are not permitted in the building or armory, but I think I can work around that. I'll just run outside and catch someone after they've armed before they leave for post and snap a few shots. Tragically, it's not the weapons they care about, it's the stupid facilities. Damn technology age is actually starting to be a hinderance...

Cool, just don't go out of your way unnecessarily or get yourself in trouble. I'm primarily interested in a couple measurements; the location of the barrel guide ring and the length of the magazine tube.
