Hello from DE

Post by KillEmAll148 »

Hello all. I have purchased my first shotgun and it is obviously a Remington 870. Tactical model. Does not have ghost ring sights or the tactical choke. So far my upgrades have been a Magpul SGA Stock, MOE Forend, I also got the receiver sling attachment from them and a gifted MS3 sling from a friend who didn't want it. I have browsed the site a lot and I have seen the upgrades that I can do.

I do have one question regarding a barrel upgrade. Does anyone know here if I can upgrade to a 20" rifled barrel with deer sights with my shotgun. It does not have a standard mag tube with extension as it is a Tactical model. it comes with a factory extended mag tube of 6+ 1 or 7+ 1. The shotgun will double as home defense and something to use at the range. I know I can buy rifled slugs for a smooth bore barrel. The range is only about 200 yards I believe on those. The Sabot slugs are supposed to reach out farther. So any help as to if I can upgrade to a rifled barrel or not would be appreciated.

Thanks!

In short, no. The Tactical models with the long mag tubes are meant to be single-purpose shotguns. Only 18.5" smoothbore barrels are offered that will fit without modifications.

Thanks for the replay. I Recently got into contact with Remington about this and they told me they are looking to make replacement barrels for the Tactical shotguns such as mine. They told me to look out for them Later this year or early next. So for anyone else out there like me looking to get a rifled barrel for there tactical 870 this is good news i guess.

I know they already offer replacement 18.5" barrels for these guns; were they talking specifically about other types of barrels when you spoke with them?

It would be nice to see Remington offer some sporting barrels for the 6+1 receivers, but I wouldn't hold your breath if you're waiting for fully-rifled or other highly-specialized barrels. The standard 4+1 receivers will always be a better platform for an 870 that will be used for hunting or sporting due to weight, and their capacity can still be increased to as much as 22+1 with extensions. There'd definitely be a market if Remington and other aftermarket manufacturers offered a few vent-rib and rifle-sight options for folks who want to do a little clay-shooting or hunting with their Tactical models, but I doubt it would be worthwhile for them to produce two different versions of the whole range of 870 barrels.

If you really want a rifled slug barrel for your Express Tactical, you should see if you can find a gunsmith who can modify an existing slug barrel to fit your gun by moving the barrel guide ring (or adding another one) further forward.
