Howdy from Texas
Howdy everyone. I've owned 870's since 1980. I have a Marine Magnum now that has a feed problem. From my reading I estimate that installing an 1100 lifter spring may help me. I look forward to the forum discussions.
Re: Howdy from Texas
First off Welcome, and second describe your problem in the repair/gunsmithing forum. Pic's are always helpful too.
If I was to guess without knowing anything further I would change out magazine spring before anything else. Especially if the gun was kept loaded, maybe the follower too, depending on what it is and the condition. Your 870 should feed just about anything short of the little mini-shells, but people tend to neglect magazine springs on shotguns.

Re: Howdy from Texas
What exactly is the problem you're having? Details would help.
Contrary to popular belief, the carrier dog follower spring isn't what "lifts" the shell carrier, the carrier dog does that directly. The spring just makes sure the carrier dog engages the slide assembly. If that spring is the problem, it's not because it's too light, it's because it's broken. Springs are wear items in firearms, and should be replaced at appropriate intervals. If you've had this gun for a long time and put a lot of rounds through it without replacing them, worn-out springs could be part of the problem.
FYI - the 1100 uses the exact same carrier dog follower spring as the 870. The mod you're referring to involves taking the carrier latch spring from the 1100, which is the same diameter but stiffer, and using it as an extra-heavy carrier dog follower spring in the 870.
