Learn something new everyday...the Remington Support guy told me that some of the early models didn't have them....or maybe I got the 870 mixed up with another firearm (it happens).
I know that a lot of very old Remingtons didn't have any serial number... but not heard about an 870 without. The very early 870's didn't have a year code in their serial numbers.... My 1954 has none. Remington are pretty good about getting the info for you though!
I just purchased a used beautiful 870 tactical. I'm pretty sure it was manufactured in April of 2018. The letters on the barrel are CL and the serial number is AB 757221 M..
I keep getting conflicting information from all the websites. If anybody can put this one to bed for me I would appreciate it.

The marking that denotes the manufacture date is LE.
[]LE (Date Code): Remington stamps two-letter barrel codes near the receiver. The first letter (L) represents the month (February), and the second letter (E) represents the year (most likely 1984 or 2010, depending on whether it has modern features like an express finish or locking safety).
[]CYL: This indicates the choke constriction—Cylinder bore (smooth unchoked barrel)—not the date.
RS (Serial Number): Stamped on the receiver to track the frame. Because 870 barrels are easily swapped, Remington manufacture dates are always determined by the barrel stamp rather than the receiver serial.
