870 forend oversized
870 forend oversized
I just received a high gloss walnut forend from Numrich. It is 10" long so I assume it is for a trap model. I intended to put it on a 12 gauge Wingmaster. The the chanel going through the forend is way too big in diameter for the action tube. Also, after tightening the tube nut all the way, the forend moves back and forth on the tube. Rattles like crazy. Was there ever a different action tube for 870? The forend is uncheckered, high gloss, extra long with finger grooves. Beautiful, I would like to use it. Thanks for any thoughts. Jeff

Re: 870 forend oversized
It sounds like you may have an 870 forend that was designed for the older trap/special models that used a different action tube length. Standard Wingmasters usually take the 7 ¾" action tube, while there are also 6 ½" and 10" versions that require matching wood. If the channel is oversized, it could be from a later synthetic conversion or simply a mismatch between tube and wood. There isn’t really a different “diameter” action tube, but the length and style matter a lot.
If you want to use that beautiful piece, you might either look for the correct longer action tube to match it, or have a gunsmith fit a spacer/sleeve so it doesn’t rattle.
