18-18.5 Inch Barrel Needed for 12 Ga. Super Magnum
I have a synthetic 870 12 Ga. Super Magnum, set up for 2 3/4", 3" and 3.5" shells. I'm looking to purchase an 18-18.5" barrel and recognize that those barrels are only to be used with 2 3/4" or 3" shells. My question is, will those barrels fit my receiver, given that it is also set up for 3.5" shells? I can't seem to get any solid answers on my question. My goal is to utilize this 12 ga. for home defense and don't care about the sights but would prefer interchangeable chokes so I can dial it in. Thank You for your time!

I'm pretty sure the answer is Yes, an 18-18.5" barrel designed for 2 3/4" and 3" ammo will fit in your Remington 870 receiver, even though it is set up for 3.5" ammo. Just make sure you use ammo that matches that barrel length, as it is not recommended to shoot 3.5" ammo through this barrel.

I think this is correct.
I don't have a Magnum, I'm not a gunsmith or expert on the 870, but I think the problem here is the 3.5" shells won't physically chamber in a 3" barrel.Just make sure you use ammo that matches that barrel length, as it is not recommended to shoot 3.5" ammo through this barrel.

So if you accidentally use 3.5” bullets in a 3” barrel, is there a risk of damaging the gun or causing danger? Is there a way to ensure that you don’t make this mistake during use?BKinzey wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2025 5:30 pmestelacpennington wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2025 6:51 am I'm pretty sure the answer is Yes, an 18-18.5" barrel designed for 2 3/4" and 3" ammo will fit in your Remington 870 receiver, even though it is set up for 3.5" SHELLS.

First, they are referred to as shells, not bullets. I said they won't chamber, possibly if you use enough force. Never use excessive force and you should be fine.polim219 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 19, 2025 8:36 amSo if you accidentally use 3.5” bullets in a 3” barrel, is there a risk of damaging the gun or causing danger?
