Slug barrel

Post by Steve P »

My father is passing down his 870 to me. Not sure how old just yet but guessing maybe from the 80's or 90's. I want to swap a rifled slug barrel on it for deer hunting. Saw some reviews about bad ejections when people did this. Has anyone heard or had this problem? Didn't know if it was from more modern 870's or older ones. Any advice would help. Thanks

The extraction issue is more myth than legend. There were a few Expresses a few years ago that had some extraction issues with cheap Walmart steel shells because of some rough chambers but a chamber polishing or a couple hundred shells run through cured that. The Expresses from the late 80s-mid 90s we’re actually very good guns.
Is the one your getting an Express or Wingmaster?

I'm not sure at this point. I will try to look up the numbers soon. I will be shooting higher quality slugs once I get the new barrel. I just know my dad has run all kinds of cheap bird shot through it and never heard of any problems. Thanks for the feedback.

Put on the Volquartsen extractor and forget about those problems. Takes about 30-seconds to make the swap on your 870 bolt. I've never had extraction or ejection problems on either of my slug barrels in any case, but the Volquartsen is a nice upgrade.

Just dont run foster slugs through your rifled barrel the lead plugs up the rifling and trust me its hard to get it clean again
