Greetings from CA

Post by ralius0121 »

Hello everyone.

I've just purchased and received my first shotgun earlier today and I'm already having trouble. I've recently purchased a Remington 870 Police Magnum and Magpul Furniture for the beast and I could not remove the fore-end castle nut for the life of me. It made me believe that the castle nut was screwed on by some superhero (or super villain in my eyes.) Did anyone else have the same issue with such a thing or can anybody give advice to tackle this issue? Gee-whiz, Remington... why?!?

Welcome to the forum, and sorry about your problems.

I have owned my 870 for about 3 weeks. After I had cleaned mine about the second time, total of about 100 shots fired through it, but vigorous additional working of the action bars for break-in, I noticed my forend felt a tad loose. Sure enough, with only needle nose pliers, I could tell the fore end nut was not snug and had backed off a bit, or maybe was not snug from the factory, I did not check. I removed it and retightened and so far, an additional 75 or so rounds later, I have had no issues. Mine is a regular Expresss with synthetic furniture. I had no signs of and loctite and no need for a special tool. Good luck!

Hopefully you've already figured it out, but try some penetrating oil on the threads (take care if it's a wood fore-end that you care about saving). Holding the fore-end in a padded vise can also help you safely apply more leverage to the nut.

PB Blaster makes a super penetrating oil/rust dissolver, but good ol' Kroil works fine too usually.
