Wilson Combat Green Follower

Post by ShotgunSam870 »

My cousin gave me his old Wilson combat follower for an 870. I’ve read from some people, that the bigger size of the follower will limit one less round, using a standard 4+1 capacity and stock spring retainer on an 870. Has anyone had this supposed problem or have any insight?

The solid body & tail of the Wilson follower (as well as similar designs from other manufacturers like S&J Hardware) will reduce capacity somewhat in a 4-round magazine. If you want to maximize your capacity in a non-extended magazine tube, a cup-style follower is the way to go.

However, I've used various tailed followers - including the Wilson part - in 4-round magazines without an issue. They function just fine, and leave sufficient space for four typical 2.75" shells - even with a spring retainer in place. If you want to load four longer 3" shells though, that's when you'll want to run a cup-style follower. And if you're trying to fully maximize space in order to fit five 2.5" or 2.25" shells, you'll probably want to omit the spring retainer as well.

All this really depends on the specific shells you're using, so you just have to try things out for yourself with your own ammo.
