Shotgun cards?

Does anyone have experience with Estac cards? I like the idea of not having a permanent mount on the gun. Pros and cons?

They are great cheaper, lighter, no worries on over tightening the hardware on the receiver and affecting reliability but can carry extra cards on you for fast and easier loads. I have not had experience with the esstac brand cards thought I would recommend S&J hardware shell holders. Either brand you can go wrong.

Thanks for the reply and the link. I've been thinking about cards for a while for both an 870 and a Mossberg. I like the idea of being able to use the same cards for both guns.

+1 for S&J. I've had mine for 4 years, kept shells in it 24/7 for a long time. I use it in high-speed competitions and at the range as often as I can.

Nice shotgun! I looked at the S&J site and they appear to be of better quality than the Esstac. May I ask what length of barrel you have on that 870, and what mag extension you are running?

I am redoing a police trade in I got a couple weeks ago and am looking of an extension for an 18in barrel, non dimpled tube.

Thanks! That's the original 18" fixed-IC choke barrel on my 870 Police Magnum. The mag extension is the factory Remington part that I added (and it comes with the barrel clamp). This is a pretty old picture, I've since replaced that barrel and a few other things, but the overall look is still the same. Nice flush fit with the mag extension with my 18" rifle-sight barrel, too.

That's actually an 18.5" barrel; the factory Remignton +2s will extend past an 18" barrel slightly.

I've been wanting an extension, but am concerned about any issues with it extending paste the barrel. Are my concerns unfounded?

There's no problem with a magazine tube extending past the muzzle. It's quite a common sight on competition shotguns, in fact:


The tube would have to stick way out there to have a chance of being hit by shot - probably a foot or two at least. You may have to clean some powder residue off the top of the extension, but I've dealt with that before; it's no big deal.

Now, on a fighting shotgun, you generally don't want an extension to stick too far past the barrel, as it's exposed there, and more likely to become damaged and disable the gun's feeding ability in a struggle, or if the gun is being kicked around. But if the difference is just half an inch or so like in the image I posted earlier, it's not a problem - especially with a reinforcing bracket or clamp giving the tube some additional support. The Remington factory extensions were actually designed to be this way, as the stepped-down portion in front is there to attach a bayonet on military 870s:
