Greetings! I guess I'm the newest old guy. I loved the 870s! My dad hunted with a 12ga 870 Wingmaster for as long as I remember so when I was ready to hunt, a 20ga Wingmaster was my gun. When I was a senior in high school, my dad, grandpa, and I went to the local department store and I bought a 12ga Wingmaster which I hunted with for many years. When I got into waterfowl hunting later in line, I bought an 870 Express Super Magnum that I call Thunderstick.
A couple things of interest.....
1) My grandpa took my dad to the sporting goods store where my dad bought his 870.
2) My dad bought his gun in 1951.....which if I'm correct is the first year the 870 was manufactured. A great treasure!

Re: New guy from the Heart of America
Welcome to the forum.
Pretty sure the 870s were first sold in 1950, as there are 870 ads & literature from that year. Some sources (especially Wikipedia) say 1951 was the year it was introduced, and Remington's website says both, depending on where you look (though their website is pretty terrible, all-around). Still, a vintage 1951 model is pretty darn cool.

Wiki was my source so since it is user supported and on the internet it must be correct?
I have the serial number now and will contact Remington tomorrow to see.
I know the one I have from the late 60s through the most recent Express has design in the wood that is pressed in. I always remember my dad's having those designs actually routed into the stock.
