Have you ever seen one receiver damaged by the follower?

I've seen that before and I think the key words there are "Heavily used Magnums", but you made a good point.

Yeah, like I said earlier, most 870 owners who buy fancy steel followers will never put enough rounds through their guns to see something like this, so there's no real harm done as long as the follower functions correctly (and there are poorly-designed followers out there, both plastic and metal). But for those who are legitimately looking for performance, reliability, and durability for the whole gun as a system, I believe a high-quality plastic follower made from modern materials offers more than steel followers. If it needs to be replaced 5,000 or 10,000 rounds later, well, no one who shoots that much should balk at replacing wear parts occasionally.
