Cheap recoil help

I love shooting my 870. But get the blacks and blues each time, I have been aware and try to adjust my grip and shooting practices, but is there a cheap yet good safe recoil suppression option out there? Thanks.

Remington SuperCell recoil pad. Best 20 bucks I ever spent on my shotgun. If Remington doesn't make a SuperCell for your stock, there are some other recoil pad options out there, but I don't think any other pad gives you quite the bang for the buck you get with a SuperCell.

Another good way to reduce recoil that a lot of folks overlook: lighter loads. International trap & skeet shooters do perfectly fine with 24 grams (a hair less than 7/8-oz) of shot. That's nearly 25% less lead and ~40% less free recoil energy than a 1 1/8-oz American target load at the same velocity. My new favorite thing for recreational clay shooting is 3/4-oz handloads. I can go through hundreds of them, as fast as I can load & launch clays, and not feel a thing afterward. They're cheap to shoot too, since they don't use much shot & powder. And for HD, there are a ton of options for low-recoil buckshot.

personally I've had wonderful luck with Sorbothane recoil pads (Kick-EEZ) but Pachmayr also makes them.

I've found that where before I might have had a bruise, the Sorbothane really absorbs the bruise-causing shock. The gun still recoils, but it can't bruise me nearly as bad.

I ordered the Remington one, Says something like up to 52% recoil suppression, For me 24% would be great! I am sure this will be fine.

Just to clarify, a recoil pad will not reduce recoil (unless it adds significant weight to a gun, which most do not). What a good recoil pad does is spread the same recoil energy out over a longer amount of travel, so that there's less force applied to your shoulder at any given time. For example, it takes half the force to soak up the same amount of recoil energy over twice the distance. When Remington says their pad reduces recoil 52%, they're probably referring to the peak of some force curve, not the total energy (or, just as likely, they're pulling numbers out of their collective butts). A good recoil pad will also conform to your shoulder under recoil, spreading the force out over a larger area. More area for the same amount of force means less pressure on any one spot.

Felt recoil is pretty subjective, so any advertising that makes quantitative claims should be taken with a generous grain of salt. Even if the numbers are genuine and they're used correctly, the fact that there are numbers means they were probably measured using a machine that has very little in common with your actual shoulder. However, I can vouch that good pads like the SuperCells are a real improvement over the typical firm rubber or hard plastic affairs.

Installed the Remington Soft pad,,, I will test it out next Wednesday! I will be sure to report back. I am sure it will help, The difference from the stock pad is pretty noticeable,,,

Well that new pad helped tremendously! I was amazed on how she felt, my description? Buttercream pie. Great cheap fix, no black n blues!
