Hello from Michigan

Post by AF Shooter »

Hi everybody, i just wanted to Introduce myself. I'm from west Michigan and i of course love Remington shotguns, the 870 in particular. I am a big fan of this website, the moderators and the members here. I still learn new things about the 870 here, and i really like to discuss all aspects of the Remington 870, from it's uses, to upgrades and well, anything 870... Greetings from Michigan! As i said i have two 870's; One is has a 21" Vent ribbed barrel, Imp Cyl. Rem Choke and a +3 mag extension (as well as a few upgrades). This is my "All Purpose" Shotgun, and am going turkey hunting this year with it. The other is as simple as you can get, it's an 870 4+1 with an 18" Cyl Bore barrel and is totally factory stock-No alterations made to this one. I got this a Dicks Sporting Goods for an incredible price. They wanted $350 for it, Msrp. But they offered me 10% off for applying for a Dicks's Crdit card, and also offered $10.00 off on top of that when i got the Dicks' Discount card. So i paid $314.00 + tax ($339)out the door, and i am getting $20 back in the mail as well. Pretty good price for a nice new Remington 870.. :D

I'm including a couple pics of my Remington 870's

Welcome to the forum.

There's something I've been wondering about those bare-bones 18"/4+1 870 models. Do they use the new-style internal-ratchet plastic spring retainers, or are they built on 870 Tactical receivers with non-dimpled mag tubes? And even if they use the plastic spring retainers, does the barrel guide ring have a magazine cap detent like the 18/18.5" barrels used on other Express Tacticals?

Yes, the one i bought uses the new Internal-ratcthet plastic spring retainer and came with the two dimples. I actually just removed the dimples last night and am buying a Wilson Combat +2 mag extension and other than sights, i'm leaving it as is. Yeah it's a basic 4+1 Express w dimples.

So the barrel doesn't have a mag cap detent, either?

Nope, no detent, Just a ratcheting end cap. I was a little surprised at that, but that's the way this one came. I just bought this 870, so it's the newest "incarnation" of the 4+1 Remington 870. It doesn't say "Express" or anything anymore. It just says Remington 870 on the side, and doesn't even say Express anywhere (although it is obviously an Express).

That's interesting that Remington makes a separate barrel without the detent for this particular model, rather than just using the same barrels from the Express models with magazine extensions. Guess the manufacturing savings are worth the extra production.

Yeah, that's what i was thinking too. I still feel this is a good value, and i'm glad they still offer a basic 4+1 for $350. It shoots and handles great, and it suits my my needs for am HD Shotgun. You still can't beat the basic Remington 870 for quality and reliability.
