Remington 870 Super Magnum Magazine Extension Questions

Post by hkcarr3 »

I have a Remington 870 Super Magnum that I'd like to add a magazine extension on. I'm wondering what others have installed, and their experiences with them. In particular I'm concerned with the extension kit's springs and it's functionality in a Super Magnum's magazine tube. I'd rather know ahead of time before I spend the cash what else I might need for it to work properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Super magnum magazine tubes are the same as those in standard 12ga 870s, so they're compatible with the same extensions, and any given magazine spring will work just as well. The only difference is that 3.5" shells take up more space in the tube, so you might not be able to fit as many of them in there, but I'm sure you're aware of that.

As for what else you'll need to buy, that really depends on what kit you're getting. Some kits are ready to go out of the box, some need a little work like spring trimming, others may need certain added or replacement parts to work properly. Do you have a particular magazine extension kit in mind?

Also, current-production Super Magnum 870s use the new-style internal ratchet cap retention system, and their magazine tubes have two dimples in the end that will need to be removed before you can get full use out of your extension. The simplest and cheapest option is probably going to be drilling them out, or you can take it in to a gunsmith and have them do it.

I have a Super mag too. I had two Mag extensions installed (no three) on it. I had a Choate +2, a Remington +2, and a Nordic +3 at one time on it. Synchro explained pretty much all you need to know, however i'll add that i had to trim the spring for all but the Remington brand one. Yeah, if it's a little older, basically any 870 mag extension will go right on; the mag tube is the same as any other 870.
