Discuss all accessories and upgrades available for the Remington 870 shotgun: stocks, forends, barrels, chokes, magazine extensions, followers, safeties, sights etc.
Greetings and welcome to my first post. I recently purchased an 870P from 1994 that was a police dept turn in. The shotgun is in almost new condition and I couldn't be happier.... EXCEPT.... I'd like to get a mag extension for my new shotgun. Thus begins my journey of disappointment.
I bought a factory mag extension that supposedly would match my shotgun because it is the "parkerized" version. The extension was a very poor color match as you can see in the picture.
So my question for you all, how can I find a matching factory extension for my 1994 870 Police Magnum? It has the 20'' barrel so I would love the +3 20'' extension. Is it possible?
Remington offers +3 extension parts with Parkerized, Express matte oxide, and Wingmaster polished blued finishes. I have a Parkerized +3 tube, and it's dark-colored just like the +2 in your picture.
The tricky thing with Parkerizing is that the color can vary quite a bit depending on the exact finishing process. Your gun may be old enough that it was finished differently, or perhaps the gun was refinished at some point by a 3rd party using a different process (my money's on the latter, personally). Either way, it doesn't look like you're going to get an exact color match out of any factory extension kit. Perhaps you could paint the extension to get its appearance closer.
By the way, if you weren't aware, all you need to have a +3 extension is a +3 extension tube, since your current +2 kit has the same coupling, spring, and clamp you'd get in a full +3 kit.
You're probably out of luck if you want to buy new. The factory Parkerizing on current-production factory +3 extension kits is exactly the same as the Parkerizing on the +2s. If your gun is wearing an old factory finish, you might be able to find an older used extension kit that matches. Otherwise, if a color match is that important to you, you'll probably have to refinish the extension, the gun, or both.
