Hello all,
I recently purchased a Remington 870 as a home defense shotgun. I took my wife to the range today to get her comfortable with handling the gun and know how to use it, etc. Just the basics. She found though that the stock made it uncomfortable for her to try and reach the fore-end due to the stock being so long. Basically the whole gun was too long for her to be comfortable with using.
Any suggestions as a good stock to replace the old one with? I am a newbie as far as guns and replacing parts so any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks everyone,
-Mike

What gauge is this 870, and what stock does it have now? The standard length of pull (the distance from the butt to the trigger) for 870s is 14"; you can buy shorter ones, but your options depend on your 870's frame size, and what stock style you prefer.
You also might want to look at your fore-end. If you bought one of the HD 870 models, it probably came with a short, police-style fore-end. These short fore-ends don't really offer a lot of advantages for most HD applications, they're mostly there to look "tactical". Changing to a longer fore-end can make it a lot easier for smaller-statured shooters to reach and operate it.

The Hogue 12" LOP stock, also called the youth model, may be your best option. On my 870 the LOP was closer to 11 3/4". If you need a stock for a 20 ga, Mesa Tactical makes an adapter that allows installing a 12 ga stock. It looks a little odd, but seems to work.
The Magpul is very nice, but about 12 1/2" in its shortest configuration. it is also a little bulkier than the Hogue.
Synhcronizor posted a variety of forends that will be easier to reach. Changing the stock may allow her to use the current forend so I would replace the stock first and go from there.

If it is really a handful for her, you might consider a Rem. 870 in 20 gauge.
As for reduced-length-of-pull stocks, most manufacturers make a youth size stock that can fit the bill. You might consider the style of stock she does best with. For example, on my defensive 870 I have a pistol-grip fixed stock from Choate with a youth length of pull. I think the conventional stock by Hogue is excellent, however.
Good luck with sizing the gun to fit the intended user.

I bought a Knoxx recoil reducing stock and fore grip. My wife is 4' 11", 100lbs, I'm just under 6'. The adjustable stock allows both of us to shoot the gun. She doesn't have any issues with the recoil, kinda likes it!
